Somatic Journaling for Eating Disorder Providers
This group is designed to help Eating Disorder providers find comfy ways to connect with their body and support their nervous systems while being exposed to diet culture and trauma daily at work.
What you’ll learn over 6 months:
Interoception skills: Interoception is the ability to receive information from your body. We will explore 5 different ways the body communicates and practice each one.
Pendulation: This is a movement that happens naturally in your nervous system. You will learn what it is, why it’s important, how to track it in yourself, and how to track it in others.
Resourcing: This is essential in any healing work. It is the key to feeling in control of your emotions without becoming overwhelmed by them. This also makes embodiment work much comfier- and even pleasurable at times!

how we plan to support the crap out of you:
We (Hannah and Michelle) have the combined training, skills, and experience to help you safely process your relationship with your body and body image. Our approach prioritizes comfort, supports nervous system regulation, and builds resilience against secondary trauma exposure unique to eating disorder providers.
Hannah Milks, SEP (she/her)
Hannah created Somatic Journaling to help people who are healing from trauma connect to their body in pleasurable ways, and learn how to translate discomfort (anxiety, tension, fatigue) into information that reveals our unmet needs and un-enforced boundaries. Her role as a Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner is to bring a nervous system perspective to the typically cognitive act of journaling. This approach acknowledges the physiological impacts of stress and trauma which allows for participants to create sustainable and long lasting change in their lives while working in a high stress industry.
Michelle Wilson, MS, RDN, LDN, CEDS-C, CIEC, RYT-200 (they/she)
Michelle wanted to combine the enjoyment of Hannah’s Somatic Journaling with the challenges of the eating disorder profession. As a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist Consultant, they thought this could be a great opportunity to offer group supervision focused on provider well-being. It can be great to take time to practice what we preach! As a clinical manager, an eating disorder provider, and a human with a body, they will use their knowledge to help relate Hannah’s Somatic Journaling to the eating disorder profession.

is this group for me?
-
All eating disorder providers are welcome to this group- dietitians, therapists, psychiatrists, supervisors, consultants, etc. who work with clients with eating disorders.
-
We will meet on the third Friday of the month from 10:30am-12 pm. The dates are: March 20th, April 17th, May 15th, June 19th, July 17th, and August 21st.
It is important that you come to as many meetings as possible so everyone can get the most out of the group nature of Somatic Journaling.
-
No previous training in somatics or Somatic Experiencing® is required but a curious mindset, interest in bottom up approaches, and willingness to sit with uncomfortable bodily experiences will help you get the most out of this group.
-
Being a part of a group as a participant can feel much more vulnerable than leading a group. Are you ready to have your healing be witnessed? Your grief be held? And to witness others without giving advice or stepping in? The purpose of the group in this case is to be present with others while taking care of yourself. This role of receiving can be uncomfortable to people who are so used to giving.
-
This group is an affirming space for all sexual and gender identities.
-
Providers of color have likely had different experiences than white providers in the field and in life. If you are not able to hold those experiences as valid without explanation this is not the group for you.

What did past clients think about somatic journaling?
Fun fact: This will be the 6th time Hannah has facilitated Somatic Journaling. Michelle attended as a participant in 2025 and pitched the idea to modify the curriculum for ED providers. Now she’s co-facilitating!
-
“Somatic journaling showed me how to lovingly and compassionately allow my body to speak its experience; I learned how to flow through both the comfort and discomfort and not just listen but hear the information my body has always given me.”
-
“Learning these tools has helped me gain trust back within my body. On the first night, I wrote about how I felt like my body didn't trust me. Through learning these steps, I've learned how to calm my body when it’s in fight or flight. I've learned how to slow down and not beat myself up constantly. I've learned to just show my body compassion and love, because it freaking deserves it.”
-
“Somatic journaling taught me how to be in tune with the connection between my physical feelings and emotions introducing a trust in myself that I hadn’t met before”
-
“It's very, very easy to have someone tell you that you have "tools in your toolbox" but if they don't feel natural to use it's super easy to forget them. The type of self care and coping that I've been able to develop through Somatic Journaling feels innate and, honestly, has been happening right under my nose without me even noticing it sometimes.”

What are Hannah’s qualifications as an SEP?
-
Somatic Experiencing® (or SE) is a three-year professional training in trauma healing and nervous system regulation. It's designed for wellness professionals (therapists, coaches, massage therapists, physical therapists, etc.) to understand how stress is stored in, and can be released from, our bodies. Read more about how it works here.
What sets me apart as an SEP is my personal commitment to somatic healing. In addition to completing the training and assisting with new cohorts, I have done over 200 hours of somatic therapy. This work is not just something I preach- it's a practice that has transformed my life.
-
In my somatic work it is important to me that I establish certain conditions and expectations before, during, and after I am offering my support.
Consent. The most important part of my somatic work is respecting any "no" I receive- including indirect no's such as people scrolling on their phone instead of participating, hesitation, questioning, etc. I expect (and support) my clients to say no to anything that feels uncomfortable or unsafe. However, our society is so anti consent that many of us struggle to say no directly, and my goal is to help clients reconnect with what yes and no feel like in their body then practice saying yes to what they like and no to what they don't. If consent is violated it is never too late to reach out and I will always be grateful for the opportunity to apologize, take responsibility, and learn how to offer better support to others in the future.
The client is the expert in their experience. I view my role as a facilitator between my client and their intuition. I am providing education and tools for my clients to interpret the information their nervous system is giving them about what needs they have that aren't being met. It isn't my job to tell anyone how they feel, what they need, or how to get their needs met. It is my job to listen, notice, reflect, and ask questions that help empower clients to get their needs met.
I'm human, I will make mistakes, and I am always open to feedback. While I do my due diligence to take care of my nervous system, continue my education, and not perpetuate systems of harm I am still liable to fuck up. I welcome constructive criticism of my work from non clients and feedback of any kind from my clients. It is my job to listen without becoming defensive, apologize, and offer repair to improve the relationship (if that is desired) when I cause harm to any of my clients.
I have personally received this kind of care after conflict with my therapist and it was so impactful. I realized I had never been able to express when harm was caused without being defensive of my experience. The ability to express harm and assert my needs without defensiveness has made my life so much less shitty. I hope if I cause harm I can provide you the space to express yourself without need for justification or explanation.

True somatic work is liberation work. Our bodies feel when they are being exploited by capitalism, endangered by racism, and made to feel small by patriarchy. These systems contribute to our growing feelings of anxiety, depression, dissociation, and hopelessness. Our bodies are telling us that the world we live in is not compatible with feelings of safety, growth, community, and being loved the way we yearn for.
As a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner it is my role to bring awareness to how these systems are harmful to our mental health, and to not participate in cycles of harm. I have been doing antiracism work since 2019 and work to decenter whiteness in both my creative and somatic work. I am passionate about implementing liberation strategy in the way I run my business. I believe change starts now- within myself and my business.
I am very lucky to have learned SE from Mahshid Hager who used her experience as an immigrant and as an experienced practitioner working with people of color to educate my predominately white cohort on best practices and important considerations for doing SE with clients experiencing social and historical trauma. I am continuing to learn more about social and historical trauma and how to best support clients experiencing it.
-
To me, healing involves slowing down, listening to what my body needs, and receiving support. Any time I do any of the those things I am practicing healing. I practice at least weekly in therapy but often daily by reaching out to friends, getting massages, taking my meds, and cuddling my dogs.
I don't call it a healing journey because there is no destination. It is a life long practice and commitment to myself.
